Our Physicians

Our physicians are specialists with extensive education and experience in reproductive endocrinology, infertility and women’s healthcare. Heartland Clinic patients will also be accompanied throughout their journey by highly trained medical assistants, administrative and casual staff.  All of whom are eager to support where and when ever needed.

   Dr. Gordon McTavish, MD, FRCSC

Medical Director

Dr. McTavish is the Medical Director of Heartland Fertility & Gynecology Clinic Affiliate of Procrea, Director of Ultrasound and a Founding Partner of the original Heartland Fertility and Gynecology Clinic. His extensive experience in women’s healthcare and gynecological surgery includes advanced operative laparoscopy, hysteroscopy and all areas of reproductive and infertility care. His expertise includes tubal reanastomosis, laser surgery, endometriosis surgery, uterine fibroids, and uterine anomalies.  Learn more.

     Dr. Stephanie Appleby, BSc, MD, FRCSC

Physician

Dr. Appleby completed her residency training through the University of British Columbia and University of Manitoba, and is certified as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada with specialty in Obstetrics and Gynecology. In her residency, Dr. Appleby received the Dr. Marvin Reynes Memorial Prize and Dr. Earn Award for promoting patient advocacy, health promotion and disease prevention and most effectively working within a health care team to achieve optimal patient care. She is a welcome asset to the clinic with her calm, kind presence. Learn more.

     Dr. Jason Elliott, BSc, MSc, MD, FRCSC

Physician

Dr. Jason Elliott obtained his undergraduate and master’s degrees at the University of British Columbia. He then completed his medical degree and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Manitoba.  He subsequently worked as an associate physician at Heartland Fertility and Gynecology clinic and then relocated in 2014 to Toronto to complete a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons accredited fellowship in Gynecologic Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Mount Sinai Fertility. He concurrently participated in the 2 year Clinician Investigator Program, and has recently returned to Winnipeg. Dr. Elliott is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences at the University of Manitoba, runs a reproductive endocrinology clinic at the Women’s Hospital at Health Sciences Centre and is an Associate Physician at Heartland, practicing reproductive endocrinology and infertility.  Learn more.

     Dr. Gunu Warraich, BSc, MD, FRCSC

Physician

Dr. Gunu Warraich, BSc, MD, FRCSC, obtained her medical degree at the University of Manitoba. She then went on to complete a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons accredited fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the Ottawa Fertility Centre in Ottawa, Ontario. She returned home to Winnipeg in 2018 to join Heartland Fertility and Gynecology Clinic as an associate physician. She has dedicated her practice to reproductive endocrinology and infertility. She is an active member of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) and the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society (CFAS), having co-authored the CFAS-SOGC Canadian Practice Guidelines for Social Egg Freezing in 2018. Dr Warraich is eager to apply her knowledge and expertise with assisting those coming to Heartland Fertility Clinic with achieving their dreams of family. Learn more

     Dr. Khaled Zohni, M.B.B.Ch, MSc, PhD

Physician

Dr. Khaled Zohni, M.B.B.Ch, MSc, PhD attended the University of Alexandria for his medical and master’s degrees, and completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He later moved to Montreal and was designated by McGill university with a PhD degree in studying novel strategies for fertility preservation using stem cells. His next stop was in Toronto, where he completed a fellowship in Gynecologic Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility from the University of Toronto at CReATe fertility centre. Dr Zohni published several articles in peer-reviewed journals and authored a book chapter on fertility preservation in cancer patients. He is the recipient of several commendations from the Centre for the study of reproduction (CSR) at McGill University, and the Réseau Québecois en reproduction (RQR), and in 2017, the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society (CFAS) awarded him the Dr Marinko M. Bilijan Memorial Award, which recognizes an REI specialist who has made a distinguished contribution to clinical research.Dr Zohni joined our clinic the summer of 2018, and with our team, is offering patients fertility treatments and surgical management of fertility-related gynecologic conditions. Dr. Premal Patel, MD FRCSC

Physician

Dr. Premal Patel is an Assistant Professor in the Section of Urology at the University of Manitoba. He completed his Fellowship in Male Reproduction, Microsurgery and Sexual Medicine at the University of Miami. Dr. Patel is an expert in microsurgery and specializes in novel surgical techniques for vasectomy reversal and sperm extraction. Prior to completing his Fellowship, he completed his Urology Residency at the University of Manitoba and obtained his Medical Degree from the University of Calgary.     Jennifer Leinweber, R.N.

Clinic Manager

Jennifer Leinweber’s role at Heartland Clinic began as a member of the nursing team and has since evolved and expanded into the role of Clinic Manager.  She is dedicated to providing Heartland patients and staff with a safe, positive, respectful and innovative environment.  Her nursing experience has always been focused on women’s health. Before joining the Heartland team, she worked in high and low risk obstetrics. Jennifer is an active member of the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM), the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society (CFAS) and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) and has completed a nursing certificate course in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI).

    Dean Isaac

Accountant and Financial Counsellor

Dean joined the Heartland Fertility Clinic team in 2014 with a background in corporate accounting. His primary responsibility was at that time to manage the clinic finances. He has since expanded his role and will be now be guiding patients through the costs of the various procedures available. He will be available to help navigate options for treatment financing if required. His goal for this new role is to remove the barriers of financial concerns, allowing patients to focus on success at Heartland.


Laboratory Technologists

Cindy Faraci, M.L.T., Your Team, Heartland Fertility, Winnipeg, Manitoba    Cindy Faraci, M.L.T.

Laboratory Supervisor

Cindy Faraci is a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) with experience in clinical chemistry, and research experience in transplant immunology, chemistry, and anatomy and physiology laboratories. She is a member of both the Canadian and Manitoba Society of MLT’s and is licensed with the College of Medical Technologists of Manitoba. She is also a member of the Canadian Fertility & Andrology Society and regularly attends national meetings. She has successfully completed the ESHERE Basic Semen Analysis course.

 

Deborah Manchur, M.L.T, Your Team, Heartland Fertility, Winnipeg, Manitoba   Deborah Manchur, M.L.T

Embryologist/Andrologist

Deborah Manchur is a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) with experience in serology, parasitology, prenatal screening, and research at the University of Manitoba. She is a member of both the Canadian and Manitoba Society of MLT’s and is licensed with the College of Medical Technologists of Manitoba. She is also a member of the Canadian Fertility & Andrology Society and attends annual national meetings.

 

 Jennifer Scott, BSc, Your Team, Heartland Fertility, Winnipeg, Manitoba    Jennifer Scott, BSc

Embryologist/Andrologist

Jennifer Scott has a Bachelor of Science with distinction from the University of Manitoba. She has experience in biochemistry, analytical chemistry, immunology and microbiology laboratories. Jennifer is an active member of the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society (CFAS). She is a certified embryologist through the CFAS, and has successfully complete the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) Basic Semen analysis course. Jennifer regularly attends national and international meetings in assisted reproductive medicine.

 

    Suzanne Gomes, MSc

Suzanne has a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and a Master of Science in Bioscience, Technology and Public Policy from the University of Winnipeg, with a focus on genetics. Suzanne has experience working in research laboratories and has co-authored several scientific publications.  She is a member of the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society (CFAS).


Nursing Staff

The Heartland Nursing team regularly attends conferences and in-services to keep up to date on the latest Advanced Reproductive Technologies (ART).

 

 Charissa Goertzen, R.N., Manager

Charissa transitioned to Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility nursing at Heartland Clinic after spending her professional career in low risk obstetrics and postpartum care.  She is confident that her experience in women’s health, as well as her personal struggle with infertility will enable her to provide others on the same journey with highly compassionate care and understanding.  She is an active member of the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM) and the Association of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (ARNM), as well as the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society (CFAS) and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM).

Cathy has a strong medical and surgical background in pediatrics, women’s health and ICU. She has worked in various facilities across the country and has experience in Advanced Reproductive Technologies (ART) nursing. She is a member of the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society (CFAS) and an active member of the CFAS Nurses Special Interest Group. She is also an active member of the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM), the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) and has completed a nursing certificate course in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI).

 Susan Larson has experience in women’s health, gynecology, labor and delivery, postpartum, and neonatal care. She specializes in Advanced Reproductive Technologies (ART) nursing, is a member of the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society (CFAS) and a member of the CFAS Nurses Special Interest Group. She is also an active member of the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM), the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) and has completed a nursing certificate course in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI).

 

    Nicole Derendorf, R.N. B.N.

Nicole joined the Heartland team with an array of nursing experience.  Prior to working at Heartland, her career has spanned over Neonatal ICU, Pediatrics, Family Practice and Clinic Management.  Her work in healthcare has taken her across the USA and over to Australia.  She is an active member of the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM) and the Association of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (ARNM), as well as the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society (CFAS) and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM).

 

   Wendy Scurfield, R.N.

Wendy joins the Heartland team with a strong and varied background in Women’s Health. She brings with her experience in women’s health research, fertility nursing and labour and delivery. She is passionate about women’s health and understands the struggles infertility can bring. She is eager to apply her experience, passion and understanding to caring for those on their fertility journey. She is an active member of CRNM, ARNM and CFAS.
