The infertility treatment journey is characterized by emotional ups and downs. It’s not uncommon for those to go from having a positive and hopeful outlook one day to a depressed and anxious one the next. Not knowing when your emotions will shift leads to added stress. The uncertainty is one of the most difficult aspects of treatment. Our goal is to be a supportive partner throughout all of the ups and downs you may experience.
All of Your Feelings Are Okay
All of the emotions you will experience are an important, and completely valid, part of your fertility treatment experience. The suggestions below can help ease you through this time in your life.
- First and foremost, focus on yourself. If possible, cut down the amount of time you spend working or volunteering. If you have children, arranging for help with childcare can be very helpful.
- Revisit stress reduction techniques that have been beneficial to you. Many patients report that journaling, meditation, yoga, reading, movies or napping can be helpful in temporarily getting your mind off the more stressful aspects of treatment.
- Lean on your support system. Friends and family will be there to listen when things aren’t going so well, and to help you celebrate when things are going your way.
It may be a bit uncomfortable, but allowing yourself to feel each emotion fully and without judgment is immensely helpful. The fact is that this is an emotionally charged period of your life. Embracing that reality will help you manage your emotions as they arise and make you stronger throughout the experience.
Communication Is Key
Even the best, healthiest partnerships and relationships with friends and family will be tested during this stressful time. Try to keep the lines of communication open, and remember that it’s up to you to decide just how much information you want to share–and with whom you want to share it.
